The History of Tuned 

Designed by Sean McDowell and released in 1998 under the name Air Max Plus, Nike Tuned quickly joined the ranks of fashion sneaker icons. McDowell found design inspiration while relaxing on a beach in Florida and you can spot this influence in the palm tree design found across the sides of the shoe. The shoes were actually created with runners in mind, though quickly gained a reputation as a fashion sneaker among Australian subcultures.

You may also notice the iconic Nike Swoosh looks thinner and longer than usual, the explanation for this is pretty simple: McDowell didn’t have the template for the tick when he designed the Tuned. The altered tick became just another aspect of the shoe that is totally unique and iconic.

Why the Tuned collection is so popular 

Nike’s Tuned collection is popular because it’s a break from convention. From the reflective bars spanning from the heel to the tongue, to the slightly altered Swoosh – these shoes dared to be different back in ’98 and they continue to be entirely unique.

What’s the difference between Tuned and Air Max Plus? 

There isn’t one! The Air Max Plus, Nike Tuned, and Nike TN1 are all different names for the same shoe. You can distinguish Tuned shoes from others in the Nike Air Max ranges by its unique ribbed design and slightly thinner Nike Swoosh.

What if the shoes I order don’t fit?

Can I run in Nike Tuned? 

While the Tuned was originally designed to be a running shoe, the model is best suited as a casual fashion sneaker. Nike has a range of performance and running sneakers that will be better suited to running.
